It is critical to hire a properly licensed, bonded and insured contractor. If a person you hire is not insured properly you could potentially lose your home if they were hurt while working in your home. You could also be responsible for their taxes and any workers they bring into your home.
Since 2010, it is also required that if you own a home built before 1978 that your contractor be properly trained on lead safe work practices. Lead dust is highly hazardous and your home must be tested before work begins to insure that there is no lead present in any of the paint. Fines up to $15,000 can be levied!
